In-line liquid concentration or density measurement for process control in chemically aggressive liquids

Vaisala K-PATENTS Saunders and Teflon body Process refractometers PR-23-W and PR-23-M are designed for measuring the liquid concentration and density in chemically aggressive solutions and in ultra-pure fine chemicals.

The PR-23-W/M masters highly accurate measuring technology in demanding process control applications where conventional density equipment may struggle due to undissolved solids or bubbles in the process stream. The instrument installs directly into the process pipe or vessel and provides a continuous 4-20 mA or digital measurement signal for real-time process control.

The refractometer system consists of a Saunders body refractometer PR-23-W or a Teflon body refractometer PR-23-M and an indicating transmitter.

  • Saunders body process refractometer PR-23-W is designed for use in large-scale production and in large pipelines (diameter 50, 80 or 100 mm; 2 inch, 3 inch or 4 inch respectively).

The PR-23-W is delivered with a Saunders (DIAPHRAGM) valve body and can be mounted either in a vertical or horizontal pipe. The Saunders body material is graphite cast iron, which provides a solid mechanical base and the PFA-lining ensures the chemical resistance. The rest of the sensor wetted parts materials are Teflon®, Sapphire (Al2O3), Kalrez® and Spinel (MgAl2O4) that offer excellent chemical and mechanical resistance. The sensor cover is stainless steel AISI 316L.

  • Teflon body process refractometer PR-23-M is a compact refractometer for small pipe sizes. It is connected to the process by a G1/2 inch female or a 1/2 inch NPT process connection and it can be mounted either in a vertical or horizontal pipe. It has a built-in flow cell designed to keep all metal and corroding parts from encountering contact with the process liquid. All wetted parts are made of non-metallic materials, either PTFE (Teflon®) or PVDF (Kynar®) providing resistance to corrosion.

The refractometer system features dual connectivity, i.e. one transmitter can operate two sensors. A second sensor can be easily integrated later.

The measurement range covers 0-100 % by weight. The accuracy is typically ±0.1 % b.w. and the measurement is automatically temperature compensated. Low and high concentration alarms can be configured.

Each sensor is provided with a calibration certificate comparing a set of standard liquids to the actual sensor output. The calibration and accuracy can be verified on-site with the certified Refractive Index liquids.

Key Benefits

Designed for harsh environments
Vaisala K-PATENTS Process refractometers PR-23-W/M combine advanced CCD-camera technology with excellent chemical resistance for large scale production lines and small pipe sizes. The sensors are designed for demanding process conditions, high temperatures, pressure and vibration.
Easy and cost effective to install and operate
Process refractometer PR-23-W/M is installed in the main processing line or bypass via Sanders valve or Teflon body.

PR-23-W/M includes an Ethernet based communications solution which allows connection to computer networks and to the Internet. Real-time measurement data and diagnostic information may be obtained through this interface, and this makes it also a valuable service tool for parameter changes and software updates.

The refractometer has no lamps or moving parts requiring regular maintenance or recalibration. Users can simply 'install-and-forget', getting a low total cost of ownership.
Accurate and reliable
Vaisala K-PATENTS Process refractometer PR-23-W/M measurement is based on unique technology utilizing solid-state optics and a CCD-camera to provide a digital measurement of refractive index. The measurement accuracy is ±0.0002 RI (which corresponds to ± 0.1% by weight).

Because of the digital sensing technology, even large amounts of suspended solids, bubbles or color changes do not affect the measurement or the accuracy.
